In the past, only 3-axis machines were used in the market. Instead, they have been very prevalent in the industry till now due to their inexpensiveness. However, these 5-axis machines are relatively modern and require a handsome investment. You won’t see 5-axis machining in small shops. However, there are many perks that 5-axis machining offers.

 

The 5-axis machine offers precision, speed, and the ability to create intricate shapes. In the past, CNC machines were precise and quick, but they were not ideal for making intricate shapes. Why? Because they had limited axes of movement for their cutting tools. However, these 5-axis machines are diverse in terms of axes of movement.

 

The cutting tools in these machines can move in 5 axes. In simple words, the cutting tools get more angles for cutting the tools. As a result, they shape the workpiece precisely. Moreover, you don’t have to reposition the workpiece after every cut. The tools adjust as per computerized instructions to cut the material with ease.

One axis indicates one path, so five-axis machines allow cutters to move in five paths while cutting the workpiece. As I said earlier, conventional machines used to have three axes: the X, Y, and Z axes. So, the cutting tools had to move only these three axes.

 

This limitation of movement of cutters restricted their performance. These 5-axis machines use two more additional axes. Here are the axes that conventional CNC machines come with:

 

  • X-Axis: This axis allows the cutting tools to move sideways. Are you confused by sideways movement? It indicates that the tools can move from right to left.
  • Y-Axis: This axis allows the cutting tools to move back and forth. In other words, tools move in backward and forward directions.
  • Z Axis: This axis allows the tools to move up and down direction. With this axis, the cutting tools cut the workpiece from the upside. 

 

These three axes are standard in both 3-axis and 5-axis machining systems. However, the 5-axis machines consist of two additional axes. Here are their names:

 

  • A Axis: This axis offers rotation for the cutting tools or the workpiece. It rotates around the X-axis, which I mentioned above. This additional A axis helps the cutting tools tilt forward and backward.
  • B Axis: This axis rotates around the Y axis. The cutting tools can tilt side-to-side and get more angles to cut the workpiece. Remember, the A and B axes are related to the rotation movement. The cutting tools tilt, rotate, and approach the workpiece from different directions and angles. This enhances the performance of these 5-axis machines.

As I said earlier, the 5-axis machines are more versatile and flexible. Having 5-axes of motion allows these machines to create complex shapes. With these machines, you’ll get better performance and precision. The old machines come with either two or three axes. Their cutters can only move in a few axes. 

 

So, they fail to cut the workpiece from different angles and directions. Let’s dive in and discuss the advantages of the five axes:

 

  • Five axes in machines allow you to cut the workpiece in one go. You won’t have to adjust the workpiece’s position again and again. Remember, repositioning the workpiece takes more time and reduces efficiency.
  • 5-axis machines are more precise than 3-axis machining setups. Why? Because they can cut the workpiece from different angles. Additionally, tools can easily follow even complex instructions. In 3-axis machines, the cutting tools’ movement is limited, which affects their precision. The tools do not fully follow the instructions due to a few axes.
  • 5-axis machining systems are more capable of creating complex-shaped products. You’ll be able to complete different projects and gain more business. The machines with fewer axes are limited in terms of their production capabilities.
  • The 5-axis machines can complete complex tasks in very little time, so they will have less running time. This means they will consume less energy, which will save you some bucks. 
  • The 5-axis machining completes the tasks quickly. So you’ll be able to meet the strict deadlines with ease. It will improve your business’s overall productivity. The old machines with fewer axes are a bit slow. They take more cycles to complete the cutting tasks.

1- Design Creation

 

The first involves designing the product shape that you want. This step is typical across all CNC-based machines. As I said in a previous article, different software is available to make these designs. However, CAD software is the most popular. Why? 

 

Because it has a user-friendly interface and allows users to create 3D models with ease. Generally, this process is handled by the manufacturers. You can also prepare it with an expert designer if you are a customer. The manufacturing companies also have their CAD designer. So, you don’t have to worry if you don’t have the know-how of CAD software.

 

Quick Highlight: I never recommend that you make 3D models from an outside designer. Instead, the design process should always be left to manufacturers who will make the parts. All you have to do is tell them your requirements. They will handle the whole process, reducing the chances of errors. 

 

2- Creation of Coded Instructions

 

The second step is also standard across all the CNC machining. You’ll have to convert the design into the coded instructions. But the question is HOW? At this stage, you’ll have to use CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software. 

 

You’ll have to give your design to this software. After processing, it will provide you with programmed instructions. These instructions will go to the computer. Remember, these instructions are for the cutting tools. The computer will read this instruction and send appropriate signals to cutting tools about how to move.

 

3- Execution of Coded Instructions

 

The 5 Axes machines consist of a computerized system. This computer interprets the coded instructions and sends signals to the cutting tools. Remember, these instructions tell the cutting tools which direction to move. The instructions are based on the design made in the first step.  Once the tools follow the instructions, they create shapes in the design. 

 

Remember, those tools move simultaneously in different directions and angles. As we are discussing a machine with a 5-axis, the tools will move in 5 different paths as per the instructions. So, they cut the workpiece effectively. The movement of cutting tools in 5 axes is what differentiates it from other CNC machining systems.
